BACKGROUND
Ascom is a global solutions provider of ICT, mobile workflow and communication systems focused on healthcare, retail, hospitality, and manufacturing. Their vision is to close digital information gaps and enable the best possible decisions – anytime, anywhere. Their main focus is healtcare and they build products with the latest techniques for users within many industries over the world.
OPPORTUNITY
Make the communication between patients and health care personnel intuitive, easy, and accessible, and give the patients freedom to adjust windows, media, lights without needing to leave the bed or call for help. The aim is to shorten the time for patients to get help and make the nurses and doctors jobs easier, better and focused on care where it's needed.
SOLUTION
To enable nurse calls, clinical consulting and clinical communication and collaboration solutions for hospitals, we created a universal and intuitive communication device accessible directly from the bed, designed in different variations for different hospital needs.
MY ROLE
USER RESEARCH, ERGONOMICS, UI DESIGN
As one of my first interaction design projects, I was working tightly together with the design lead / product designer. With user studies at hospitals with patients and nurses as target group, I was responsible for ergonomic requirements, interaction design and icon design.
Through user tests and interviews at hospitals we built mockups at workshops, illustrated the problem/need and designed icons and interactive using for the handset. The handset was designed in different variations depending on the user or placement need.
KEY TAKE-AWAYS
UNIVERSAL DESIGN FOR PATIENT SAFETY
Working so closely with a senior product designer and focusing on universal design and rehabilitation, my previous skills from projects with ALS patients and ergonomics in cars, gave me new perspectives, better ideas and improved knowledges about the tech industry for patient safety.
REDDOT DESIGN AWARD 2012
The award explains the result, a great boost to my early design career!
